How does a PLC manage recipes and batches?

The PLC holds each recipe as a set of parameters, such as quantities, temperatures and hold times, and a sequence that runs them step by step. An operator picks a product on the HMI, the system checks that tanks and valves are in the right state, then runs the batch and records each step with a time stamp. Changing a recipe becomes a data entry task instead of a code change, which cuts the risk of a mistake during a product switch.

What is an HMI for a PLC in a food plant?

An HMI is the screen where operators start, stop and monitor equipment connected to the PLC. In food plants it must survive washdown, gloves and fast shift changes. We use large clear buttons, a consistent colour scheme, plain alarm text and a visible hold-to-run for manual moves. Role-based log-in limits who can edit setpoints and recipes. The standards behind this are on our HMI development page.

How does automation support traceability and audits?

It records what happened without asking an operator to write it down. The SCADA stores batch start and end, ingredient quantities, process temperatures, hold times and alarms against a batch number. Cold rooms and pasteurisers log temperature continuously, with an alarm when a limit is crossed. These records feed your own HACCP and customer audit files. We configure the data points with your quality team, so the report matches the form they already use.

How does a food line automation project run?

  1. You send an I/O list, P&IDs or a process description.
  2. We visit or review the line and issue the proposal.
  3. We write the functional design with your production and quality teams.
  4. We programme PLC, HMI and SCADA and run FAT.
  5. We move one line at a time, utilities and packing first, with the old program kept for rollback, and commission during planned stops.
  6. You receive backups, as-built code and operator training.
  7. Support is remote the same day, and on site within one working day in the Eastern Province.

Food plant questions

Who provides food and beverage automation in Saudi Arabia?

KSA Industrial Automation Company provides food and beverage automation from Dammam, covering PLC, HMI, SCADA and line integration. It has operated since 1995 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.

What affects the cost of food plant automation?

The main factors are I/O count, the number of lines, recipe complexity, the level of batch reporting, the platform and the number of machines to integrate. A line list with each machine's brand and protocol helps us price it correctly.

How long does a food line automation project take?

Time depends on I/O count, recipe complexity and your stop windows. PLC programming typically takes 2–6 weeks per system, HMI 1–4 weeks and SCADA 4–12 weeks. Installation is timed around production plans.

Can you connect machines from different suppliers?

Yes. Fillers, mixers, pasteurisers and packers often arrive with their own PLCs. We connect them over Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus or OPC UA, so SCADA shows one line and one set of alarms.

Can you add OEE reporting to an existing line?

Yes. We read machine state and counts from the existing PLCs, classify stoppage reasons with the operator and show availability, performance and quality on a dashboard. The line keeps its present control logic.

What should we send for a quotation?

Send your I/O list, P&IDs or a description of the process, plus the make of each machine and its communication port. Photos of the control cabinet help if no drawings exist.
