ABB AC500 PLC and HMI programming with Automation Builder
The AC500 is ABB's PLC range for machine, process and utility control, programmed to IEC 61131-3. It scales from compact controllers for small machines to higher-performance CPUs for larger plants. Typical jobs are pump and fan control, conveyor lines, water and wastewater stations and packaged skids shipped with ABB drives and motor control. As an ABB system integrator we cover the whole chain, from logic to screens to the drive parameters.
| Service | Platforms | Standard | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC500 programming | AC500 in Automation Builder, using LD, FBD, ST and SFC as the process needs | IEC 61131-3 | 2–6 weeks per system |
| HMI commissioning | ABB CP600 panels in Panel Builder 600; WinCC or FactoryTalk View where specified | ISA-101 principles | 1–4 weeks |
| SCADA | WinCC, FactoryTalk, AVEVA or Ignition over OPC UA or Modbus | IEC 62443 basics | 4–12 weeks |
| Drives and starters | ABB drives and soft starters linked by Modbus, Profinet or EtherNet/IP | Per device manual | Within programming time |
| 800xA interface | Data exchange between the AC500 system and a plant 800xA system | Per project | Per project schedule |
| Testing | Offline simulation, functional FAT and a written SAT record | Per project ITP | Per project schedule |
Which software is used for ABB PLCs?
ABB uses Automation Builder as the engineering suite for the AC500 family. It covers PLC programming, fieldbus configuration, drive set-up and the CP600 panel link in one project, so the controller, the drives and the screen share the same variable names. Panel Builder 600 is used for the CP600 operator panels.
The suite is licensed software, so we work on your licence where you hold one and confirm the version at the start. When an older AC500 project is missing its source file, we upload the program from the running controller, review it and rebuild a working project before changing a line.
Is ABB a DCS system?
ABB offers both. The 800xA is ABB's distributed control system for large process plants, while the AC500 is a PLC for machines, utilities and smaller process units. They are often installed on the same site, with the AC500 reporting status and alarms to the 800xA over OPC or Modbus.
Our scope with an 800xA plant is the interface: the data map, the signal tests and the alarm hand-off. For wider system work, see our DCS integration page. Choosing between ABB and another PLC brand comes down to what is installed, who maintains it and what the owner specification names.
How do we deliver an ABB PLC and HMI project?
- Enquiry. You send the I/O list, drive schedule, P&IDs and any 800xA or SCADA details.
- Site data. We confirm the CPUs, drive models, network layout and the data the screens must show.
- Design. A control narrative, I/O allocation, network plan and interface list are issued for approval.
- Programming. We write the AC500 logic and drive communications, then build the CP600 or SCADA screens.
- FAT. Against a simulated process we test each interlock, alarm and drive command and record the result.
- Commissioning. On site we check loops and interlocks, tune the drives with your electrical team and run the SAT.
- Documentation and support. You receive the program, parameter lists and backups, and we stay on call through the first weeks.
Our method for the site stage is described under control system commissioning.
Where we deliver ABB controller and drive work
Our company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 1995 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. We have worked on projects for the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu in Yanbu.
ABB jobs come from water and wastewater operators, cement and building-materials plants, food and packaging lines and OEMs shipping ABB-based machines. Mixed-vendor sites are normal, so we also connect AC500 systems to the PLC programming services we deliver on Siemens, Rockwell and Schneider hardware. We take projects in all regions of Saudi Arabia, including Dammam, Jubail, Al Khobar, Riyadh, Jeddah and Yanbu.
ABB partner questions
Who provides ABB AC500 PLC and HMI programming in Saudi Arabia?
KSA Industrial Automation Company provides ABB AC500 PLC and HMI programming in Saudi Arabia from its Dammam office. We program the controllers, commission CP600 panels and drives, and interface to SCADA or an 800xA system for plants across the country.
Who are the ABB distributors in Saudi Arabia?
KSA Industrial Automation Company provides the engineering that turns ABB hardware into a working system. Hardware is bought through ABB's seller network and electrical distributors. The I/O schedule and drive list we prepare lets your buyers order once; we then program, test and bring up whatever arrives on site.
What affects the cost of ABB HMI commissioning?
Cost follows the number of screens and tags, the controllers and drives connected, the alarm and security requirements, the link to SCADA or 800xA and the test records you need. Site time adds to it. A signal list and screen sketches let the proposal price each part separately.
How long does ABB AC500 programming take?
An AC500 system typically takes two to six weeks to program, a CP600 or other HMI one to four weeks, and a SCADA layer four to twelve. Commissioning follows your schedule, and the I/O count and drive count decide the position in each range.
Which is better, ABB or Schneider?
Neither wins everywhere. The better choice is the platform your site already maintains and your specification names. An ABB plant full of drives and starters gains from the AC500, while a Modicon site gains from staying put. We program both and give a reasoned recommendation, not a default.
What should I send to get a quotation?
Send the I/O list, the drive and motor schedule, any 800xA or SCADA details and your commissioning window. If you only have a functional description, we begin from that. The proposal then sets out scope, duration and price in one document.
