PLC Programming Cost in Saudi Arabia: What Drives the Price

PLC programming cost in Saudi Arabia depends on I/O, logic, HMI, testing and documentation. See the factors and a scope-count example by Eng. Junaid Ali.

PLC programming cost depends on the size and clarity of the job, not on a fixed rate per controller. The main factors are the I/O count, the number of motors, valves and loops, the complexity of sequences, the HMI and SCADA scope, interfaces, testing depth and documentation. A written scope turns these into a quotation, and none of them is guesswork once counted.

What you receive: send your I/O list, P&IDs or functional description and we return a written quotation with scope, duration and deliverables within one working day. Request a quotation

What affects PLC programming cost?

Eight factors move the price. The table shows how each one acts and what you can do to control it.

Factor How it affects the cost How to keep it in check
I/O count More points mean more tags, logic and test lines Send a verified I/O list
Equipment types Each motor, valve and loop type needs a template Reuse standard types
Sequence complexity Batch, recipe and multi-mode logic takes longer Provide a clear functional description
HMI and SCADA scope Screens, alarms, trends and reports add work Agree screen list and alarm philosophy early
Interfaces Each link to a drive, meter or third-party PLC adds engineering List protocols and data needed
Platform Software licences and specialist skills differ State the platform or standard
Testing and FAT/SAT Witnessed tests and simulations take time Define the ITP and witnesses
Documentation Manuals, as-builts, backups and training Specify the required handover set

Rework is the largest hidden driver. A late change to a sequence, a new interlock or a changed instrument range forces edits to the logic, the screens, the test sheets and the documents together, so one line in a meeting can touch four deliverables. Ask your integrator how change requests are priced and approved, and keep a simple log so both sides can see what moved and why. Changes after the logic is written cost more than the same change in the functional description, so freeze the scope before programming starts.

How long does PLC programming take, and how does that affect cost?

Time is the main cost carrier because programming is engineering work. PLC programming typically takes 2–6 weeks per system, and HMI development 1–4 weeks. A system at the short end has a clear I/O list, standard equipment and one platform. One at the long end has custom sequences, many interfaces or incomplete drawings.

Quality of the inputs matters as much as the quantity. A verified I/O list with tag names, ranges and units saves days of questions, while a list copied from an old project with unverified entries creates rework at the test stage. Drawings that match the installed plant matter for the same reason. Site conditions add to the picture: travel and accommodation to remote sites, access permits, shutdown windows and working on a live plant all change the plan.

Worked example: counting scope for a pump and tank system

This is an example to show how scope is counted, not a price. A water transfer system has 6 pumps, 8 valves, 20 analogue loops and 4 interlock groups.

Item Count What each needs
Pumps (motor type) 6 Logic block, HMI faceplate, alarm set, test line
Valves 8 Logic block, faceplate, feedback alarm, test line
Analogue loops 20 Scaling, alarm limits, trend, loop check line
Interlock groups 4 Logic, description, test line
Field objects in total 6 + 8 + 20 34 objects

With 34 objects plus 4 interlock groups, the test list holds at least 38 lines before alarms are counted. Double the pumps to 12 and the objects rise to 40, so the work grows by less than double, because templates are reused. A new custom sequence, such as a lead-lag-standby rotation with fault handling, adds separate engineering that does not scale with object count. The proposal lists each of these items, so you can see which scope item drives which part of the quotation.

What should you send to get an accurate quotation?

  1. The I/O list with tag names, signal types and ranges.
  2. P&IDs or a functional description of each section.
  3. The controller platform and software versions, if fixed.
  4. HMI or SCADA needs: screens, alarms, reports, number of clients.
  5. Test requirements: FAT, SAT, witnesses and documents.
  6. Site details, shutdown dates and access rules.

If part of this is missing, say so. We can quote with stated assumptions and list the questions that would change the price.

KSA Industrial Automation Company was established in 1995 and has worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. The PLC programming services page lists the platforms and deliverables, HMI development covers the screens, and testing is under control system commissioning.

Common questions about PLC programming cost

How much does PLC programming cost?

It depends on I/O count, equipment types, sequence complexity, HMI scope, interfaces, platform and testing. We do not publish a flat price because two systems with the same I/O can differ widely. A quotation from your I/O list sets out the price per scope item.

How much does a Siemens S7-1200 PLC cost?

The hardware price depends on the CPU variant, the signal modules, the communication options and the supplier. It is a small part of project cost compared with engineering, panel, testing and commissioning. Your quotation lists hardware separately from programming.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelance programmer?

An individual may offer a lower hourly rate, but check what is included: documentation, testing, backups, support after handover and cover when they are unavailable. A company quotation covers these, and a single point of contact reduces your risk.

Can I reduce the price of a controls project?

Yes. Send a clean I/O list, freeze the scope, use standard equipment types, agree test requirements early and limit late changes. Each of these reduces rework, which is the biggest avoidable cost on control projects.

How quickly can I get a quotation?

You receive a written quotation within one working day of sending your I/O list or functional description. If details are missing, the quotation states the assumptions and the questions to confirm.
